IPRT Works for Iowa

IPRT Funding Opportunity

Are you or faculty colleagues considering a joint research project with an Iowa company? Maybe we can help, both with funding and program account management. Consider this.

IPRT Company Assistance at Iowa State University is a technology transfer unit that focuses on assisting Iowa companies with product development, process improvement, and manufacturing challenges.

To promote industry/university collaborations and encourage economic development within the state, IPRT has established a Contract Research program. Through this program, IPRT can provide cost-sharing funds and reduce overhead rates for Iowa companies conducting research projects meeting certain criteria. If you are discussing a research project with an Iowa company, consider the benefits of working through IPRT’s program.

Contract Research Guidelines

The Contract Research program is a year-round program whose funds can be used to cover 25-50% of the total project costs. The average IPRT contribution to a project in the Contract Research program is $15,000. Additionally, the ISU overhead rate for projects established under this program is 26%. To qualify, the research project must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • The company must have a substantial R&D or production operation in Iowa.
  • The project should be an applied research and development effort in the areas of product development, process improvement, or manufacturing problem solving.
  • The company must contribute a cash match equivalent to 50-75% of the research costs.
  • The company must sign a contractual agreement with ISU covering the project.
  • The principal investigator must provide a proposal that focuses on the technical problem with a suggested scope of work, timeline, milestones, deliverables, and budget.

IPRT staff will work with you to review the research project you are proposing and determine the budget and potential IPRT funding contribution. IPRT also generates the ISU gold sheets and all contract documents, including appropriate publication and intellectual property language. IPRT staff will even manage the program accounting and follow the project until its completion.
